Etsy Seller: Krysta’s Kloth Review 2013

June 5, 2013

WARNING: THIS POST CONTAINS DETAILS OF MENSTRUAL SANITARY PRODUCTS, IF YOU ARE SQUEEMISH OF THIS TOPIC OR ARE LIKELY TO TAKE OFFENCE TO THIS DO NOT BOTHER CONTINUING.

One of the best places to buy cloth menstrual pads is http://www.etsy.com which specialises in homemade products from jewellery to clothes to natural bubble bath! A lot of small creative businesses start out here before they launch their own website, there are 100s of different cloth pads for sale so you’re likely to find at least 1 you like. There aren’t many UK pad sellers I know of on etsy so you may have to order from further afield but there are many that have very reasonable postage charges. Saying that, ALWAYS check the postage as some sellers charge quite a lot for international shipping.

For my first review of an etsy seller I’ve chosen a shop called Krysta’s Kloth based in Canada, her cloth pads are in my top 3 favourites!  She uses cotton flannel for the top, super absorbent zorb for the centre, a waterproof layer of PUL, and cotton backing. she sells three different sizes (though she is very happy to do custom pads, I got mine in a petite width):

Pantyliner; 9 inches long with one layer of zorb and 7.5 inches snap to snap. £4.24

Light/Regular; 11 inches long with 2 layers of zorb and 7.5 inches snap to snap. £5.22

Heavy/Night; 13.5 inches long with 2 layers of zorb and 8 inches snap to snap. £6.53

The shipping costs are £1.14 to Canada or  the US you need to message her for international shipping costs but when i ordered my 5 custom pads the postage was only just over £6.00 so its still very reasonable. As you can see the sizes are generous and the prices are low but she doesn’t compromise on quality! The stitch work is immaculate, they are soft and very slim, probably the slimmest pads I own, because of the cotton back, but the pad doesn’t move around like you might worry it would without a fleese backing because the wings are wide enough to keep it in place without being bulky at all. The zorb makes them really absorbant and the flannel topping feels just like underwear and dont feel as warm as minkee or bamboo velour so if your job means you’ll be running around all day these could be perfect for you!

when I messaged Krysta about a custom order she replied almost instantly and was very helpful in sorting me a beautiful set of 5 petite width (6 Inches snap to snap) I adore them and am considering in investing in some night length ones. It feels great to support work at home mums and the pads are so well made

I always do a ‘water test’ on my pads after washing them, I use my small Lunette menstrual cup (approx 20 ml capacity) and count how many cups the pad can take, I do this over the course of 10 minutes so pads with a core that is not a ‘fast’ absorbent core are likely to get a lower score in this test but may in fact hold more if left longer. I pour the water from a full small Lunette cup over the length of the pad, let it settle, then check the underneath and sides for leaks, these regular pads could take about 5 cups before they started to leak, which is great absorbency! For reference I did the same with an overnight Always disposable pad, it could hold 5 cups also.

The main things I love about these pads are how slim and absorbent they are it’s amazing that something thinner than an always pad can hold just as much, they’re also incredibly good value, the postage is cheap and fast, the cotton prints on the back are pretty and the flannel is soft and breathable, I love them!

The only thing I can think of that she could change is I think she should put a couple of listings for the narrower width pads she did for me up. The narrower pads are much closer to the average width of cloth pads on etsy and elsewhere, I worry that the wide width may put people off who don’t realise she does custom orders or do not like asking about these things. Also her shop may get more attention if she had a couple of quirky flannel prints available, this is not something I really care about but I know many women do search around for fun prints so it might be worth having a couple in stock. Apart from that they’re great and I use her pads every cycle!

She only had a few in stock when I looked but price and shipping looked reasonable. Only thing on observation is the wings looked really small compared to width of pad. But not enough to put me off having a look in the future when there may be more choice available.
